As the number of students that are breaking gender stereotypes, identifying as LGBTQ, and coming from LGBTQ-headed families increases, it is critical for elementary schools to also establish LGBTQ- inclusive school supports, beginning with policy, equity minded site goals and professional development for all staff. The social environment of the elementary classroom provides a space for children to develop relationships and navigate increasingly complex peer relationships. That complexity can often lead to incidents of name-calling and use of hurtful and biased words. If left uninterrupted by educators and other adult role models, these behaviors can take root in children’s hearts and minds. (www.glsen.org, 2022) During our session we will share how we have increased the visibility and integration of LGBTQ students using gender support plans, professional development, and classroom lessons. We will share our experiences, and next steps for integration of students.
