Courageous and Collaborative Leadership: Connecting Before, During, and After School Experiences
In 2022 and beyond, all students need an ecosystem of support for their physical, mental, social, and academic wellbeing.

By building strong partnerships that can connect school, home, and community, education leaders can transform schools into learning hubs that empower students, support educators, and engage families. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Dawn Bridges will lead participants in an exploration of what learning hubs are, how they support students, and what is required to transform schools dynamic learning hubs that connect school, home, and community. This exploration will highlight three main themes:

Capacity-Building Partnerships for Districts
Schools need partners who can help extend academic and developmental support for students beyond the traditional hours of the school day. How can enrichment programs support the academic and social goals of schools, while providing new experiences for all students?
Relationship and Skill-Building Opportunities for Students
Students need a system of support for their physical, mental, social, and academic wellbeing. How can we help them build skills and relationships that foster a sense of belonging, accelerate learning, and bolster their confidence?

Dynamic Engagement for Families
Families need to know their kids are safe and well-cared for, in an environment where they can grow and learn. How can we connect what happens at school with what happens at home, so families can leverage school support, and be an active partner in their children’s learning?

Raiders of the Lost Art.…of Listening
Getting to the heart of the issue right now probably feels a bit like one of Indiana Jones’ perilous adventures! “...Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?” And when leaders are scared off, they’re accused of not listening.

In this session we’ll discuss an alternative to adversarial, inequitable, inefficient and ultimately ineffective constituent engagement. We’ll rediscover some common sense about listening and share how leaders can leverage technology to scale conversations to find common ground and build alignment with their school community. Most importantly, we’ll discuss how to turn what you’re hearing into outcomes that constituents own…without all the drama.

Relational Leadership: The Key to Capturing Kids’ Hearts with Vern Hazard
Many of our students today carry unreasonable expectations, stress from home, trauma, loneliness, not to mention the deep impact that COVID-19 has had on all of us. We know, and the research proves, the weight of these things is greatly impeding educational progress. There has never been a more critical time for leadership to focus on building not only safety and trust in the classroom but genuine connectedness at all levels.
We believe, “if you have a child’s heart, you have a child’s mind.” If teachers create a relational connection to students, or “Capture Kids’ Hearts®,” performance accelerates, and behaviors greatly improve because kids want to be in school. The same can be said of leadership and all staff who face challenges. When school culture is built on relationships, it is proven that campuses, districts, and entire communities can be transformed.

Audience Takeaways:
  • Create an intentional culture through a relational approach to leadership

  • Learn the power of reframing and gratitude
  • Explore a communication model that lends to deeper student engagement both virtually and in person
  • Receive key insights into the alignment of behavior to academic outcomes
  • Attendees will learn tools for creating social, emotional, and academic safety at all levels
  • Discuss strategies for positively accelerating the 5 Key Indicators of School Performance

Actionable steps for school administrators & school teams to support the mental health needs of children, students, and educators.
Dr. Adams will break down the 2021 report from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services into actionable steps for school administrators and school teams to support the mental health needs of children, students, and educators.  This report is entitled Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavioral, and Mental Health Needs.
The report documents how the mental health crisis in the United States is at a critical point. The pandemic has exacerbated already alarming trends in the mental health needs of children and students. There is a unique opportunity to reconceptualize the role of schools and programs in creating nurturing environments in our schools to address the mental health needs and overall well-being of children, students, and adults. This resource highlighted seven key challenges to providing school and program mental health supports and presented seven corresponding recommendations, which include:

  • Prioritize Wellness for Each and Every Child, Student, Educator, and Provider
  • Enhance Mental Health Literacy and Reduce Stigma and Other Barriers to Access
  • Implement Continuum of Evidence-Based Prevention Practices
  • Establish an Integrated Framework of Educational, Social, Emotional, and Behavioral-Health Support for All
  • Leverage Policy and Funding

  • Enhance Workforce Capacity
  • Use Data for Decision Making to Promote
  • Obtain Equitable Implementation and Outcomes
